Different Types Of Drywall

types of dry wallTypes of drywall are an often asked question. There are many different types of drywall. The most popular type of drywall is standard drywall, frequently called whiteboard.  Another type of drywall is called green board. Green board drywall can be installed in damp areas of your home. The third type of drywall is blue board drywall. Blue board drywall is much like regular drywall, but it has a special blue paper affixed to the gypsum board. Blue board drywall is coated with plaster much like metal lath. Type X drywall has unique additives that allow it to be used in fire-rated designs and most often comes in 5/8” thickness. Purple drywall is designed to be moisture, mold, and mildew resistant. Purple drywall is perfect for moist areas of your home, such as basements. While drywall is still the most commonly used material, many different types of drywall can be used on your construction project.

Sizes Of Drywall

Drywall comes in different sizes. While the most common size of drywall is 4’x 8′ sheets.  We use a drywall sheet size that minimizes the number of joints in the finished product. Drywall comes in various thicknesses, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch being the most common. When Fairfax Contractor installs drywall on larger projects, we will use 4’x 12′ drywall sheets.
